ADVOCACY
Speaking in support of another as in providing representation to clients with appeals

APPEAL
A formal request to a higher authority asking for a change to a decision. The levels of appeal for Employment Insurance are: Board of Referees, Umpire and Federal Court

APPLICATION
A formal written request for Employment Insurance Benefits

AVAILABILITY
Willingness to accept immediately any employment opportunity without demanding anything more than what is suitable under the legislation in terms of type of work, wages or salary, hours and other working conditions.

BENEFITS
Money received through the Employment Insurance program

BOARD OF REFEREES
The Board that hears a claimant’s appeal and is composed of representatives of business, labour and the community

COMMISSION
Referring to the body of Employment Insurance

DENIED
A refusal to allow a claim

DISENTITLED
Your right to benefits has been taken away

DISQUALIFIED
Becoming ineligible to benefits

EARNINGS
Money received as a result of employment and may include bonuses, back pay, severance, pension, wage top-up and earnings from working

FALSE
Making a statement or committing an act with the intention to deceive

FINE
A sum of money to be paid as a penalty

FIRED
Dismissed or terminated from employment

A detailed list of places you have contacted for employment

JUST CAUSE
Having “no reasonable alternative,” but to leave your employment.

MATERNITY
Women in pregnancy or childbirth

MISCONDUCT
An act committed intentionally knowing there is a risk of being fired

MISLEADING
Causing a wrong or incorrect impression whether verbally or written

NON-PROFIT
No profit is made through the operation of the agency

OVERPAYMENT
You have been paid more than you were entitled to whether by accident or intentionally

PARENTAL
EI Benefits for either the biological or adoptive parents while they are caring for a new-born or an adopted child

PENALTY
Monetary Punishment for breaking a rule as in not declaring earnings

POGEY
Slang name referring to the federal insurance program for those out of a job

RECORD OF EMPLOYMENT
Is for Employment Insurance purposes only and sometimes referred to as a separation slip. An ROE contains information EI needs in order to process your claim

SEVERANCE
Money paid as compensation, usually based on the length of service, to an employee who is terminated or retires

SUITABLE
A comparison between the duties of the usual occupation and those of the prospective employment

TELEDEC
The telephone reporting system for Employment Insurance claimants

TERMINATION
Fired or let go by your employer

UI
Unemployment Insurance, the previous name for the now Employment Insurance program

UMPIRE
A federal court judge that hears Employment Insurance appeals at the second level of appeal

VIOLATION
Is issued for the failure to obey a law or regulation such as false reporting and it increases the amount of hours needed to establish an Employment Insurance claim

VOLUNTARY
To make the choice or decision to provide information to EI not previously given or withheld
